What is the difference between an oldómedence (settling tank) and a biological wastewater treatment system?
An oldómedence (settling tank) does not require aeration or electricity and simply stores and settles wastewater, requiring a large infiltration field for further treatment. In contrast, a biological wastewater treatment system actively treats the wastewater using aeration (requires electricity), resulting in much cleaner water suitable for root zone irrigation. The biological system has low maintenance costs (approx. 1000–2000 Ft/month), does not require regular pumping, and produces compostable sludge. Note: The biological system requires electricity and may not be suitable where power is unreliable. Source: Ökotech-Home FAQ.
